Workers from Walters Construction have been hard at work making improvements to Deborrah Hyde Avenue as part of a city-wide effort to improve the streets, drainage, and pedestrian access.
The project on Deborrah Hyde Avenue involved rehabbing old lines so that they would not leak, replacing mains and water services, making improvements to crosswalks and curbs, and resurfacing the street.
This project, along with work done on 3rd Avenue and 15th Avenue, are part of an $8 million dollar project to improve the city’s water and drainage systems in those areas. Although the projects came with high price tag, none of those funds were paid directly by the city. Half of the funding came from an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant that the city applied for while the other half was provided by a grant from the Mississippi Municipality & County Water Infrastructure Grant Program (MCWI). These two grants were able to work together to prevent the city from having to put up matching funds for the project, which would have cost up to 4 million for the city’s taxpayers. With both grants applied for and won, the city was able to complete all three projects at no cost to the city.
Stay tuned for more details and updates on these and other projects throughout the City Beautiful.
