Ward 1 Councilman Jason Capers awards four Peacemaker Scholarships to local seniors

May 27, 2022

On Tuesday May 17th, Ward 1 Councilman Jason Capers awarded scholarships to four local seniors who have been making a difference in their community. Laurel seniors Cassidy Mccullum, Genesis Jackson, JaLincia Wilson, and Mathias Coleman each received a Peacemaker Scholarship during Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The Peacemaker Scholarship was created as part of Capers’ Brighter Tomorrows program. It was designed “to encourage our young people” Capers explained to the council while presenting the awards. Students must demonstrate leadership in each of four categories: nonviolent conflict resolution, racial reconciliation, social justice, and active citizenship. This year’s awards were sponsored by Community Bank, Neel-Schaffer Engineering, and Suez Water.

Congratulations to these outstanding graduates as well as the entire Class of 2022!

The City of Laurel, established as a lumber town in 1882, is conveniently situated approximately two hours from larger destination cities such as Jackson, Biloxi, New Orleans, and Mobile. In recent years, the city has become a destination all its own thanks, in part, to its starring role in HGTV’s popular “Hometown” series. As Laurel, and interest in it, continues to grow, we are committed to providing the resources necessary to help all of our residents and businesses reach their full potential.
