Mayor Proclaims April 23rd – April 29th National Library Week

April 25, 2023

Libraries can help us find answers to many of life’s questions. How can I find a job? Visit the library. Where can I get tax forms? Visit the library. Where do sound waves end up? Visit the library, the librarian is sure to have a book that covers it.

On Tuesday, April 25th at 10 a.m. the pressing questions being answered at the Laurel/ Jones County Library included “Where is Corduroy’s missing button?” and “Will he ever find a home?” as Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee dropped by to read “Corduroy” during the library’s weekly story time.

After the reading, Mayor Magee, joined by helpful members of the audience, signed a proclamation to recognize National Library Week in the City of Laurel.

Librarian Kandice Evans, Children’s Services Supervisor, thanked him for his visit and for recognizing the services that local libraries provide to their communities.

“It is so amazing to be able to come talk to these young minds,” Mayor Magee said. “The best part is being able to impact the children here.” He was also appreciative to the library for the many resources that they provide to both children and adults. “They do so much for the community,” he said. “We’re just honored to be a part of it!”

The proclamation read as follows:

Whereas, libraries have long served as trusted institutions, often the heart of their cities, towns, schools, and academic campuses;

Whereas, an interest in reading and literacy is an investment in Mississippi’s future; and

Whereas, Mississippi’s libraries are free and open to all people; and

Whereas, libraries serve people of all ages, interests and backgrounds providing the resources and space to engage in life-long learning; and

Whereas, the libraries in Mississippi are celebrating National Library Week, April 23rd through 29th; and

Whereas, Laurel-Jones County Library encourages citizens of Laurel and Jones County to use the resources available to them to promote reading and ultimately improve all aspects of life

Now, therefore, I, Johnny Magee, Mayor of the City of Laurel, Mississippi, do hereby proclaim the week of April 23-29, 2023, as National Library Week in the City of Laurel and encourage all citizens to use our library to gain the knowledge they need.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Laurel, Mississippi, to be affixed this the 25th Day of April, A.D. 2023.

The City of Laurel, established as a lumber town in 1882, is conveniently situated approximately two hours from larger destination cities such as Jackson, Biloxi, New Orleans, and Mobile. In recent years, the city has become a destination all its own thanks, in part, to its starring role in HGTV’s popular “Hometown” series. As Laurel, and interest in it, continues to grow, we are committed to providing the resources necessary to help all of our residents and businesses reach their full potential.
