On Wednesday, September 13th Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee joined the ladies of the Nahoula Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution to sign a proclamation designating September 17th through September 23rd, 2023 as Constitution Week in the City of Laurel. Each year, members of the NSDAR celebrate this week by providing educational resources to schools and communities nationwide.
The City of Laurel followed suit by providing quick constitution facts across all of its social media platforms throughout the week.
Currently, the city is providing information across its social media accounts about domestic violence and survivor resources in recognition of October as Domestic Abuse Awareness month. Mayor Magee will sign a proclamation to designate the month as such on Friday, October 6, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in Pinehurst Park across from City Hall. The event is open to the public and free to attend. Additionally, in honor of domestic abuse survivors, the Laurel Police Department will host a blood drive on Friday, October 20th from 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the LPD parking lot.
The proclamation read as follows:
Whereas, September 17, 2023 marks the two hundred, thirty-sixth anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and the anniversary of its creation; and
Whereas, it is also fitting and proper to recognize officially the patriotic celebrations which will commemorate the occasion; and
Whereas, Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States of America designating September 17 through 23 as Constitution Week.
Now, therefore, I, Johnny Magee, Mayor of the City of Laurel, Mississippi, do hereby proclaim the week of September 17-23, 2023 as Constitution Week in the City of Laurel, Mississippi, and ask our citizens to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties, remembering that lost rights may never be regained.
Witness my signature and the seal of the City of Laurel, Mississippi, this the 13th day of September, 2023.
