On Wednesday, September 11, at 1 p.m. Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee met with members of the Nahoula Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) to sign a proclamation recognizing the week of September 17th through the 23rd as Constitution Week in the City Beautiful.
Members Kay Guy, Cynthia Bush, Becky Thrash, and Barbra Odom visited with Mayor Magee during the annual proclamation signing.
This year marks the 237th anniversary of the drafting the constitution, an occurrence that the DAR recognizes each year by providing information, new books, and pre-made lesson plans and activities to local schools. It is one of many community service projects that the organization participates in throughout the year. “We do a lot,” Becky Thrash stated. “It’s not just about being in a club.”
Thrash explained that the organization participates in fundraising and historical preservation efforts, hosts an essay contest for area high school students, and provides snack bags for local school children.
The proclamation read as follows:
Whereas, September 17, 2024, marks the two hundred, thirty-seventh anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and the anniversary of its creation; and
Whereas, it is also fitting and proper to recognize officially the patriotic celebrations which will commemorate the occasion; and
Whereas, Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States of America designating September 17 through 23 as Constitution Week.
Now, therefore, I, Johnny Magee, Mayor of the City of Laurel, Mississippi, do hereby proclaim September 17-23, 2024, as Constitution Week in the City of Laurel, Mississippi, and ask our citizens to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties, remembering that lost rights may never be regained.
Witness my signature and the seal of the City of Laurel, Mississippi, this 11th day of September, 2024.
