Laurel city officials, the Jones County Chamber of Commerce, members of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and other members of the community, joined Ann and Barry Lowery to celebrate the opening of their new bakery location at 2213 Hwy. 15 N in Laurel in the shopping center next to Bombshell Nails.
The mother and son team unofficially started their bakery in 2011 in Collins, when Ann’s youngest brother, and owner of Woolwine Ford, asked her to bake cakes as an incentive for new customers. What she thought would be a one-month gig making cakes for her brother’s business, soon turned into a business of its own. She started making baked goods, specialty salads, soups, casseroles and lunches. In 2017 she and her son, Barry, officially opened Ann’s Cakes in Collins. However, as the business grew, they realized that it was time to expand and selected a site in Laurel for their new store.
In 2019, they opened a Laurel location on Bush Dairy Road. However, they wanted to see more foot traffic and realized that a new site might serve them better. “It’s all about location, location, location!” Barry Lowery explained. Now that they have moved into their new Laurel location on Hwy 15, they are looking forward to continuing to serve the community.
“We are glad that Ann’s Cakes are staying in Laurel,” Mayor Johnny Magee told them. “We know all the customers will be here!”
During the ceremony, Lowery thanked everyone who attended and gave a special thanks to God for guiding their efforts to success as well as Mayor Magee, LPD Chief Tommy Cox, and members of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department for their support. “Jones County has been good to us,” he said. “We are very happy to be here.”
